HP OfficeJet 3830 Ink Frequently Asked Questions

What ink does HP OfficeJet 3830 use?

The HP OfficeJet 3830 printer uses HP 63 and 63XL ink cartridges. The HP 63 / 63XL cartridge comes in two colors: black and tricolor (cyan, magenta, yellow). You need both the black and tricolor ink cartridges in order for your HP 3830 printer to work.

Compatible HP OfficeJet 3830 ink cartridge replacements work just as well as original HP replacements.

What's the difference between the HP 63 and 63XL?

The HP 63 is a standard sized cartridge which contains less ink than a high yield HP 63XL cartridge which contains more ink and can print more pages. To compare, a black HP 63 ink cartridge prints only 190 pages while a black high yield HP 63XL prints 480 pages. Both black and tricolor cartridges come in high yield sizes.

How do I put ink in my HP OfficeJet 3830?

Follow these instructions when installing an original HP or compatible HP 3830 ink cartridge replacement:

  1. Lift the top of the HP OfficeJet 3830 printer (which is the scanner unit). Do not touch the cartridges while the printhead is moving. Wait for it to center.
  2. To remove the old HP 3830 ink cartridge, press down gently on it to release it. Once released, you can now pull the cartridge out from its slot. Put the empty ink cartridge aside for recycling.
  3. Remove the plastic packaging from the new ink cartridge. Remove the plastic tape covering the nozzles. Just remember that you cannot put the tape back on once you remove it.
Important: Avoid touching the gold contacts or the nozzles. Touching them can cause ink cartridge failure or error messages on your printer.
  4. Carefully slide the new cartridge into the empty slot at a slightly upward angle. Push the cartridge down until you hear a click. The new cartridge should slide easily into the slot; do not force anything if you feel some resistance, it may be that the cartridge is angled wrong.
  5. Close the top of the printer.

Do HP 63 cartridges contain dye-based or pigment-based ink?

Black HP 63 and 63XL cartridges contain pigment-based ink, while HP 63 and 63XL tricolor cartridges contain dye-based ink. Pigment-based ink for black, dye-based ink for color.

Compatible replacements for the HP 63 and 63XL black and tricolor such as aftermarket or remanufactured ink cartridges by LD Products contain the same ink type as OEM HP 63/63XL black and tricolor cartridges for the same print clarity at a lower price.

How many pages can each HP 3830 ink cartridge print?

  • A standard HP 63 black ink cartridge prints 190 pages and a high yield HP 63XL (F6U64AN) prints 480 pages.
  • A standard HP 63 tricolor ink cartridge prints 165 pages, a high yield HP 63XL tricolor ink cartridge prints 330 pages.

Remanufactured HP 63XL black and tricolor ink cartridges by LD Products contain the same volume of ink as original HP 63XL cartridges.

Is HP OfficeJet 3830 an inkjet or laserjet printer?

The HP 3830 is an all-in-one inkjet printer with print, scan, fax, and copy capabilities. The HP 3830 does not have a duplex printing feature.
